Sunday – 1 December 2013 – San Juan, Puerto Rico
The early morning sail in to San Juan harbor provided Barbara's first glimpse of Castillo San Felipe de Morro fort. I was surprised that people were still trying to "escape" to the mainland USA, but it appeared that the US Coast Guard was in hot pursuit.
Silver Spirit docked at Pier One, right at the foot of Old San Juan. The ship's location provides access to all the tacky cruise ship bars and shops but also to the quite charming side streets. We walked the ramparts and toured "El Morro" and the nearby Castillo San Cristobal, enjoying the free entry provided by our US National Parks passes and also the in-network att wireless no roaming data and cell service.
Tomorrow we spend the day in the very isolated Samana area of the Dominican Republic where we will take our first excursion, to the Los Haitises National Park.
